Jewellery Care

How to care for your jewellery

Cosmic Crystals items are made using plated metals in either 18k gold or 18k silver on a copper base. Please be aware that they will tarnish over time and do need to be cared for. To prolong the life of your piece, here are a few tips!
  • Please keep all items of jewellery completely dry.
  • Avoid wearing perfume at the same time and in the same place as your piece of jewellery. The chemicals in the perfume react with the plating which will cause it to tarnish. Strong body lotions can have the same effect.
  • Try to keep direct sun exposure to a minimum.
  • Goes without saying, but please, no showering/ bathing/ sleeping in your jewellery!
  • Avoid using household chemicals whilst wearing bracelets or rings.
  • When it comes to storing, it really is best to keep your Cosmic Crystal jewellery in its box or wrapped away in a drawer.

Jewellery Cleaning

  • Give our crystal jewellery a little clean occasionally and they will love you that much more. Gently buff your item with a polishing cloth to remove any oils or tarnish.
  • Costume jewellery - To clean these items more throughly, use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild washing up liquid, then rinse with cold water and dab dry with a soft cloth. Never use solvents, abrasives or silver cleaning solutions on costume jewellery.
  • Sterling silver - is a precious medal and may need occasional cleaning. To polish your sterling silver, apply a small amount of silver polish to a soft cloth, buff the item in a circular motion, rinse well in warm water and then dry throughly with a soft cloth.

Jewellery Tarnishing

'Will it turn my finger/neck green?'

Do your fingers tend to go green when you wear jewellery? Please don't worry as it's due the alloys in the metal reacting to your skin. Each person has a unique skin pH level. The average is 5.5 but for some their skin is more alkaline, others are more acidic. This means that for each body, it will produce more or less moisture and acid dependant upon this pH level. This, combined with external factors such as washing your hands, applying lotions or perfumes etc, can react with your jewellery so it's important to clean your pieces regularly and keep them as dry as possible. In short, there's nothing wrong with your jewellery. Just follow the tips above.

Nickel Content

All of our plated items comply with compulsory EU regulations restricting the amount of nickel in jewellery. This states that only a tiny amount of nickel may be present in the final piece (mass of nickel to total mass must be under 0.05%).
Please note that we are unable to refund any items due to tarnishing/oxidisation or allergic reactions.
